4  Conformance with specifications
4.1  General requirements of AS/NZS 3100 This Standard shall be read in conjunction with AS/NZS 3100, and the appropriate provisions of AS/NZS 3100 shall apply to the construction of the cord extension set and the insulation and/or safeguarding of parts which normally carry current.4.2  Specific requirements of this Standard A cord extension set shall be deemed to conform with this Standard only if it conforms with all the requirements of this Standard and passes the tests specified in this Standard. 4.3  Conformance with other Standards Components incorporated in a cord extension set which are depended upon for safety, shall conform with the appropriate requirements of any relevant Standard.
5  Design and construction
5.1  General The plug or socket outlet adaptor and cord extension socket shall be each of the same current rating and configuration, and in no case greater than the current-carrying capacity of the flexible cord. 5.2  Plug The plug shall be a three-pin flat-pin plug conforming with AS/NZS 3112 or a socket outlet adaptor conforming with AS/NZS 3122, and have a current rating of not less than 10 A. 5.3  Flexible cord 5.3.1  Cord type The flexible cord shall conform with the relevant requirements of AS/NZS 3191, AS/NZS 60227.5 or AS/NZS 60245.4 and shall be 3 core type, either ordinary duty or heavy duty, sheathed. 5.3.2  Cord cross-sectional area The cord shall have conductors with a cross-sectional area of not less than that indicated in Table 1 for its rating and length.5.3.3  Cord length The maximum length of the flexible cord shall be as shown in Table 1 for its rating and cross- sectional area.5.4  Cord extension socket The cord extension set shall be provided with only one outlet which shall be a cord extension socket conforming with AS/NZS 3120. 5.5  Polarization The cord extension set shall be constructed so that the polarity of the aperture configuration of the cord extension socket corresponds to that of the plug or socket outlet adaptor pins, and when viewing the mating face of the cord extension socket shall be earth, active, neutral, in a clockwise direction. The terminals of the plug or socket outlet adaptor and cord extension socket shall be connected to the appropriate conductor identified by the following colours of insulation: (a) Active — brown. (b) Neutral — light blue. (c) Earth — green/yellow. NOTE  For heavy duty flexible cord, the colours red and black are acceptable for active and neutral respectively. The connections of the conductors to the plug or socket outlet adaptor and cord extension socket shall be such that the rotation order of the cores due to the lay of the cable is identical with the order of rotation of the connections of the conductors.
6  Marking
6.1  General The cord extension set shall be marked in accordance with the relevant marking requirements of AS/NZS 3100. The current rating shall be marked in amperes. In addition, a warning tag of durable material using lettering, not less than 3 mm in height with the following wording, shall be permanently attached: WARNING — Do not operate unless cord is fully uncoiled. The following alternative marking may be provided for cord extension sets with separate reeling or coiling devices. The marking shall be permanently attached to the cord and in letters not less than 3 mm in height: WARNING — Do not operate unless cord is fully unreeled. 6.2  Location of marking The marking required by Clause 6.1 shall be on, or immediately adjacent to, the cord extension socket, except for the warning tag requirement, which shall be located as close as practicable to the plug. 6.3  Marking on packaging or accompanying literature The following marking shall be provided on the packaging of the cord extension set or in accompanying literature, in a prominent position and in letters not less than 3 mm in height: WARNING — Do not operate while coiled — remove from packet before use.
